7pm on Stoner’s Street

It is the busiest street ever at dusk, at the end of a tiresome week. Big motors end up following a convoy as they share a common destination. The sidewalk serves as an option as several footsteps are overheard. Men in suits, others in casual and ladies in their minis. All professions lower their pride on such days and head to the spot to blow off steam, party, scream out their inner voices and dance to every tune. We have the iconic miondoko boys and mistress, who always bring the dance vibe when the usual lady’s choice anthem plays. The vibe isn’t complete with a little comedy and diss by the creative Mc’s. These spots are normally packed and eardrum busting music booms. Clouds of smoke outrun oxygen, as guys puff and ‘clear’ their minds. Drinks and cocktails are served endlessly as people piga sherehe. And shifts on these days are normally virgin tight. The crowd vibes to the DJ’s terrific mashups and tunes. And oh, the energy here is normally real and wild. We are here to break the monotony from our shitty routine. This is normally a whole night festival and only when the sun rays crack through dawn is when it’s time to go home. Big engines revving, turbo charging, and loud soprano screams fill the air. People hop on for rides back home. A good number are past their limits of being high and drunk. Funny characters are unleashed and others blackout on the spot. People are carried out and others are left to sober up. The choir also leaves as they walk home singing horrifically. Totally off tune as they wake the neighborhood with those hoarse voices.

‘Furaha nikuwa na marafiki,

‘Furaha kulewa na marafiki,

This is their popular anthem. Others become fluent in English and attract a street fight from their provoking tongue. Of course, it is alcohol. Tough, isn’t it?

Well, this is the famous Stoner’s Street and on it, is the famous Stoner’s Street choir. Their simple motivating words are, ‘chafua meza’.
